Salary Caps: NHL vs EPL

NHL vs EPL
Brian Michalik
North America's largest hockey league, the National Hockey League, began on November 26, 1917 in Montreal before expanding to the United States in the 1920s. The NHL operated with the "original six" teams from 1942 to to 1967 and now contains 32 teams in Canada and the United States. The NHL is an unincorporated nonprofit association governed by the Constitution of the NHL. The governance and management structure is made up of the Board of Governors containing a representative of each team who votes to establish league policies and to appoint the commissioner. The NHL is made up of several different ownership structures, such as individual owners, investment groups, and publicly traded corporations. League-wide revenues are distributed evenly among the teams while local revenues are kept by each team. The NHL's revenues are made up of ticket sales, television contracts, merchandise sales, licensing royalties, and even expansion fees. Costs are made up of player salaries, front-office salaries, travel expenses, marketing expenses, etc.

England's top football league, the English Premier League, began on July 17, 1991 when English First Division clubs signed the Founders Members Agreement. The first Premier League season took place in 1992 with 22 teams. In 1995 four teams were relegated to lower divisions while two teams were promoted, allowing the club to reach its current level of 20 teams. The EPL is made up of teams operating as independent entities following rules defined by the Premier League Rule Book, the FA, the UEFA, and FIFA. Each club has a share of the league, allowing them an equal vote on all matters and rights to the distribution of revenues. The FA also has a special share that requires some actions, such as the appointment of the board, to have its approval. Similarly to the NHL, the Premier League has different ownership structures, such as their stock market model, domestic owners, and foreign owners. Revenues generated by the EPL from domestic broadcasting are 50% split equally between clubs, 25% split based on final league positions, and 25% split for facility fees based on televised matches. Commercial revenues are split equally among the teams. The Premier League has revenues and costs similar to the National Hockey League.

An important difference between the NHL and the EPL is the two league's rules on player salaries. The National Hockey League has a hard salary cap, meaning that no teams can spend over the salary cap for players at any point during the season, making spending fair between the teams in both large and small markets. This rule has zero exceptions and therefore the league has no luxury tax penalties. The cap is calculated by dividing each player's total salary and signing bonuses of their contract by the entire contract length. The salary cap was introduced into the NHL in 2005 at 39 million dollars per team. This past season saw a salary cap of 83.5 million dollars, up 1 million from the previous year. On the contrary, the English Premier League has no salary cap, allowing wealthy teams to spend vastly higher amounts on their players than other teams. EPL teams are still subject to financial fair play rules, although they work differently than the NHL salary cap: teams cannot record a loss greater than 105 million pounds across the previous three seasons, and any loss higher than 15 million pounds and lower than 105 million pounds has to be guaranteed by the club owner. A further difference from the NHL cap is that certain EPL costs can be deducted, including investment in youth development, infrastructure, community projects, and other such activities.

  1. I understand now how the The National Hockey League (NHL) and the English Premier League (EPL) are two major sports leagues with different histories and structures. One key difference that stood out to me was how they handle player salaries. The NHL has a strict salary cap to ensure fairness among teams, while the EPL doesn't have a cap but follows financial fair play rules. Despite these differences, both leagues aim to distribute revenues fairly among teams while promoting competition and growth.

  2. This is an excellent piece that navigates through the complex structures and economic models of two of the world's most prominent sports leagues, the NHL and the EPL. You've done a remarkable job breaking down the intricacies of each league's governance, revenue distribution, and ownership models. The comparison between the NHL's hard salary cap and the EPL's financial fair play rules offers a fascinating insight into how each league attempts to maintain competitive balance and financial sustainability. Your analysis highlights the critical role that financial regulations play in shaping the competitive landscape of professional sports leagues. Additionally, the historical context you provided for both leagues sets a solid foundation for understanding their current states. It's clear you've put a lot of thought and research into this, and it really shows in the depth and clarity of your explanation. Great work on making such a complex topic accessible and engaging!

  3. This is a very interesting article. I just wrote a blog on the comparison of basketball and went into the governance and ownership models. Seeing the differences and similarities between the two was very cool to see. The salary cap of the NHL is never something I really knew about and reading about it compared to the EPL shows a cool side by side that I didn't know before. The way you compared it to a league that many are familiar with as in the Premier League shows a really interesting approach to how leagues are handled differently than others. I also like how your post was formatted and made it easy to follow. Good Job!
